Feast OF Salt
2023
Port of Jaffa
"The Meal" connects the worlds of culinary arts and ceramics through salt as a central, unifying element.
In the center of the space, a table filled with saltwater holds floating ceramic pieces, enabling "The Meal" to take place.
The salt (cobalt sulfate) slowly permeates the ceramics, blending into them. This process reverses roles: the saltwater controls the movement and colors of the ceramics. Just as table salt seasons food, here, the salt "seasons" and colors the ceramics.
After firing the ceramics in the kiln at 1220 degrees, the blue hue emerges, revealing a new appearance. From an initial red-orange tint, a spectrum of deep blue tones unfolds, with each piece’s color varying based on the time it spent in the saltwater.
This technique, which colors the ceramics, removes complete control over the final product from our hands, surprising us every time.
